Best-to-worst rate, generally

  1. ATM withdrawal with a foreign card (check your home bank’s fee first).
  2. Casa de câmbio (exchange house) in a city center.
  3. Bank branch exchange counter.
  4. Airport exchange counter (convenient, but usually the worst rate).

How to check you’re getting a fair deal

Compare the rate you’re offered to the reference rate on our homepage converter. A gap of a few percent is normal (that’s the spread); a much larger gap is worth walking away from.

Avoid

Exchanging money with strangers on the street, regardless of how good the rate sounds — this is a common scam setup.
